Iyengar Yoga
Yoga is a system of body poses that, when practised correctly, lead to a strong and healthy body and mind. Yoga comes with an endless list of physical and mental benefits, and works from the outer, physical body to the inner, spiritual body. Yoga is, of course, much more than this, but it is a good point to start from.
Iyengar Yoga is a type of yoga popularised in the West by a man called BKS Iyengar. It focuses on correct alignment, precision in technique and in the use of props, such as belts, bricks and blocks. It is through the use of these props that students of Iyengar Yoga learn correct alignment, and develop 'body memory' - a prerequisite for understanding the classical poses.
Iyengar Yoga covers over 275 different yoga poses, representing the most complete and systematic selection of poses (asanas).
Through a regular and dedicated practice, students of Iyengar Yoga will initially explore their body, develop body awareness, as well as building a strong, lean and
flexible body, but ultimately be working towards 'the cessation of the fluctuations of the mind' (yoga citta vritta nirodah; Yoga Sutras I 1.2).
