Feng Shui
Feng shui originated over 6000 years ago in China. Its foundations are rooted in the I Ching (The book of Changes).
The I Ching is one of the oldest Chinese classical texts, describing a system of cosmology and philosophy. Through symbols it identifies order in chance events. It advocates that nothing is fixed, everything is in a constant process of change. From the I Ching, stem the foundations of feng shui compass calculations, the 8 triagrams (an arrangement of 3 lines, representing a direction, element, family member and aspect) and 64 hexagrams, (an arrangement of 6 lines consisting of a combination of two triagrams).
The original application of feng shui was related with the placement of gravesites. Finding the correct place to bury your relatives would lead to good fortune for the rest of the living family, whereas, a bad location would have the opposite effect. This feng shui is referred to as yin feng shui and it is still practiced in the east.
Our ancestors soon recognized that feng shui was not only suitable for selecting gravesites but its application also benefited living peoples’ surroundings. It became evident, that people who lived in environments, where the energy and form was good flourished. Therefore, in China all government buildings, palaces and eventually whole towns were built using feng shui principles. This feng shui is known as yang feng shui.
Today, most consultants practice yang feng shui, which relates to maximizing the potential of people’s homes and businesses so that they achieve good health, beneficial relationships, social and financial success.
