EMDR

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing) is a highly effective technique for overcoming traumas (PTSD) and phobias. It can also be used to treat anything that requires the subconscious to support a change, such as emotional concerns, weight control and smoking.

The protocol behind EMDR is to generate the same neural pathway functioning that occurs when dreaming in the REM (Rapid Eye Movement) sleep state. During REM sleep more brain connections are created and part of the purpose of dreaming is to discharge distressing issues, so restoring emotional balance.

EMDR is conducted in a fully conscious state. The client follows a series of eye movement exercises, which activates the brain to respond in the same state as dreaming. Therefore during therapy there are many more neural links created and the brain is more open to new outlooks and possibilities.

Throughout the eye movement exercises, the client is asked to access details of their presenting concern and reflect on these for a short while. Then a summary is made of any thoughts, images and feelings that arise. These become the new focus for the next set of eye movement exercises and the process is repeated.

This procedure continues along the same lines throughout the session, allowing the release of negative emotions, viewpoints and attachments. Thus the eye movements lead to desensitisation of the concern and the brain reprocesses a new and more balanced perspective.

Considerable gains can be made in one session, although deep routed problems may require a few visits to obtain a lasting resolution.
